Achterhoek revisted: Brummen, Tante Blanche, Museum More, cycling

cycling along the river IJssel

Saturday, 1 August:
We started cycling at Doesburg along the river IJssel around 11 am and were back at 5 pm. This tour was interrupted by lunch and a 'beer stop'. Lovely scenery and weather.

Wall paintings dating from the beginning of the 15th century in a (now) protestant church in Hengelo, Gelderland.

refilling (beer) at cafe ' het Wapen van Hekeren', lovely building

church of Hoog Keppel, Gelderland
As it's 'open church' weekend we are able to enter churches that normally are closed for the public. Very interesting.

We revisted (for the 3rd time) in Brummen hotel 'Het Oude Postkantoor' (a former post office) and had dinner at restaurant 'Tante Blanche'

we slept in this room @ Het Oude Postkantoor

Now some ' food pics' of the several dishes @ Restaurant 'Tante Blanche':

1st course tuna in 3 different ways: we liked the tuna with nori and curry the best

spinach soup

sea brass with risotto and fresh veggies

Rosevall potatoes and tournedos with Roquefort cheese sauce, accompanied by a glass of red wine: super yummie

dessert was superb: orange tiramisu

Sunday, 2nd August
A day with culture & cycling. After breakfast we visited the exhibition 'Sharp Focus' at the new Museum More in Gorssel. For sure worth a visit.
Of course I couldn't resist making lots of photos of the Modern Realistic art on display.

From Gorssel we drove to Lochem where we started our cycle tour in de Achterhoek. Lovely scenery, great weather. We decided to visit Borculo, where we will be staying next week; a preview ^-^

back in Lochem where we started our cycle tour with a well-deserved beer and 'bitterballen'. Look there's a guy behind the couch making a photo with his cell phone ....

Tante Blanche revisited

Saturday, 28 June: Zutphen/Brummen/Tante Blanche revisited:

exploring & shopping in Zutphen

Our second visit to restaurant 'Tante Blanche'; we had a really awesome 6 course dinner. All four of us loved it; great food, quality for money, kind service! We will return for sure!

guys having fun

Sunday 29 June; cultural Sunday

Coz rain was predicted we decided to visit the Kroller Muller museum, the sculpture garden and the special exhibition of Seurat.
We were lucky; no rain when walking the sculpture garden.

When we went inside the museum to have lunch it started to rain massively.
We saw the special Seurat exhibition and also explored the regular art works of Van Gogh and other impressionists, expressionists and more. Super!

I almost bought this awesome shawl, specially made for the Seurat exhibition.

It was a lovely weekend with our friends F&G.

Brummen; staying at a former Post Office and more

statue 'Thonis Drogenap' at Zutphen
(alpha layers :-)

Last Saturday, 18 January we visited the 'East of The Netherlands' to stay at Hotel 'Het Oude Postkantoor' a former post office and have dinner at Restaurant 'Tante Blanche' both situated in Brummen. Although the initial reason that brought us there was the exhibition of Carli Hermes in the CODA museum in Apeldoorn. We did all and more.

We started Saturday with an extensive visit to Zutphen, a lovely former 'Hanze city'. We walked around the older part of town, which we apparently had skipped on former visits, shopped and visited the Henriette Polak museum, which is situated in an intriguing old building with a hidden chapel in the middle of town. Worth a visit for sure, we liked the temporary exhibition of Norbert Olthuis and the hidden chapel.

paintings of Norbert Olthuis, reminded us of 'Die Brucke'

When arriving at our hotel we were cordially received by our host. Hotel 'Het Oude Postkantoor' has 6 rooms and has the same 'touch and feeling' as a bed and breakfast; i.e. more personal attention. We loved the atmosphere, the room, the breakfast AND the fact that we could walk to and from Restaurant 'Tante Blanche' where we had a superb 6 course dinner with selected wines. We specifically asked for small portions and they delivered: great atmosphere and lovely food & wines! (see pictures). We will return to Brummen for sure coz these are places to remember!

Sunday, 19 January

We went for a walk in the countryside; meadows, small villages, the river IJssel, mills and farmhouses. Our host at the hotel advised us to take the ferry and walk to and around Bronkhorst - the smallest 'town' of The Netherlands (stumble 4x and you are at the other end of town :-)
We were lucky; no rain but great typical Dutch skies and some sunshine as well, and a fierce cold wind especially near the river.
After drinking a tea at the local tavern we drove to Apeldoorn where we visited the CODA museum (see pics)
It was a lovely weekend!
