Italy 2018: Narni underground & Bomarzo

Bomarzo

Sunday, 10 June 2018: it's bloody hot today so we decided to visit the Underground world of Narni and in the afternoon the gardens of Bormazo.

The Underground world (Sotterranea) tour is very interesting; it tells the story of the inquisition where the Dominicans kept and tortured people accused of heresy in cellars. The cellars and more are shown, pity I couldn't make any pictures ;-(

However, first breakfast in our hotel 'La Stanze del Giglio' in Narni

ending up in the church with great frescoes

lunch in the shade

We decided to visit Bomarzo in the afternoon, coz that's situated in a forest with some shade. It has been 19 years ago we visited, but it was cool to be there again. A lot of Italian families, hardly any tourists.

In the evening we had an appointment with Monique and Willemien to have dinner at La Loggia restaurant in Narni. It was a great evening, loved it

Afterwards we had a last drink at the bar of our hotel

Italy 2018: moving on to Narni by Rieti

one of the many frescoes we saw today
Friday, 8 June 2018: leaving our comfy Tivoli appartment and moving on to the next place: Narni.
But on our way visiting the town of Rieti where we had a really awesome lunch, with the most yummie freshly baked focaccia we had until now.
Arriving in Narni we visited 2 churches and were surprised by the amazing quality of the frescoes.

First (coffee) stop at lago del Turano (road side cafe, but what a view):

Second (photo) stop: the small village Colle di Tora

didn't have a photo of 'the Volvo in Italy' yet

Next stop Rieti, where we had a really marvelous lunch  at restaurant Cintia for soo little money we almost felt ashamed, therefore we tipped well :-)

antipasto lunch to share

After lunch we visited the old basilico of Rieti, the Capella del Madonna del Popolo, where we made these photos of amazing frescoes

view on Rieti

Giardini del Vignola

Moving on to Narni, our next stop: Le Stanze del Giglio, rooms above a popular cafe in a very old building in the middle of the historic centre.

We weren't very happy with our room, BUT we managed to get a change tomorrow to a larger room, and the cafe downstairs is great with friendly helpful people. We went out to discover the city of Narni, which isn't that large.
Wow, the 2 churches we discovered had really awesome frescoes; nobody there, we loved it.

Chiesa Santa Maria Impensole

Next church we visited with a lot of frescoes on the columns; the Chiesa S. Francesco

We had dinner at Restaurant Loggia 1981, which is situated in a historical building with a lovely secluded garden:

our antipasto

Before going to sleep we had to pass our bar :-) and had one for the road; interesting to watch 'bar life'

the hard core guys ;-)

It was an interesting day.
