Kyushu - Unzen - thermal baths - 12 May 2017

on our way to have dinner in our kimono's

Friday, 12 May 2017

Today we leave Nagasaki and our nice room at the Forza hotel.
It's raining cats and dogs and will do so all day. Mhm, what to do on a day like this besides driving to our next hotel? Visit a place where it's dry; a museum.

So we did and visited the Mount Unzen Disaster Memorial Museum at Shimabara. Interesting place that tells the story of the great Heisei eruption that started in November 1990 and ended in June 1996, when the vulcano was declared dormant, the eruption killed 43 journalists, scientists and their taxi drivers. The eruptions also destroyed buildings on the outskirts of Shimabara City. Interesting place to visit for sure.

Afterwards we drove to our hotel; the Azumaen hotel/wellness resort in Unzen. A very Japanese place for sure, WITH a public onsen.
We have one of the few rooms with a bed, all the rest are with tatami floors and futons. We sneaked into a big one, and were amazed by the size of the room. We learned that that type of 'room' costs about EUR 600 till 800/night.

the enormous reception area of the hotel, where we were ordered to sit and..

drink traditional green tea (yak yak, don't like it)

our tiny room, with steel door, BUT with a bed

What does one do in a place like this on a rainy day: enjoy the onsen of course. However, as this is a public onsen men and women thermal baths are separated, so P. went to the 2nd and I to the 4th floor (not very cosy)
The water was hot and smelled of sulfur, but good for health and muscles I assume. Not allowed to make photos in the onsen.

After our thermal adventure we enjoyed dinner, still in our kimono's, which is a custom here (hey we adopt). The Japanese dinner was lovely and exciting. Lots of very small dishes with food, we didn't know.

dishes that were already waiting for us (our room number was on the table)

small glass, big bottle of beer

Japanese dinner with all kind of small (sometimes unknown) dishes

Tomorrow morning breakfast is early, at 08.30 hrs. So bedtime for me now.
dikke kus
