Nagasaki: Atomic Bomb Museum and Decima - 9 May 2017

Atombic Bomb Memorial Hall at Nagasaki

Tuesday, 9 May: a day in Nagasaki.
Today we visited the must sees here: the Atomic Bomb Museum and Memorial, and of course the 'ísle' of Decima

Goodmorning Japan; after a looong good (for a change) sleep we had breakfast at Starbucks.

in the streetcar (it's raining) to the Atomic Bomb Memorial area

The Atomic Bomb Museum:
Like the Hiroshima atomic bomb remembrance site and museum also this place was touching and proving mankind should never ever use an atomic bomb again. Touching pictures and stories. What stroke us most was the note that Japan wanted to talk about surrendering and mentioned this to Russia in June 1945.

lotsof crane garlands like in Hiroshima

horrible stories of what happened that day, 9 August 1945

Next stop: the isle of Decima, where the Dutch settlement was situated (after they had to leave the trading post at Hirado).
After walking around and reading all the information about what happened in those days in Decima and how the Dutch educated the Japanese about medicine, water works, and more, we felt really proud to be Dutch.
Dutch language was the way to study the modern Western world sciences and has been that for 2 centuries. Amazing what an influence the Dutch had.

Moreover, Leiden (our home town) was mentioned a lot coz of the Siebold museum/house and the connection with the University of Leiden. Striking to see that there are plants in the Decima garden that originate (yearlings) from the Botanical garden in Leiden where Mr Siebold planted them almost two hunderd years ago. Amazing.

Decima

set your priorities: English, Chinese, Korean and DUTCH
We received a Dutch flyer, how super is that.

Siebold (we know him from the Siebold house/museum in Leiden, which we visited several times)

Time to drink and have a bite:
No beer and peanuts, but beer and sashimi, the Japanese way:

After the bites and beer, we visited a Japanese BBQ restaurant, advised by the lady from the reception of our hotel. Great meat the Japanese way.

A while ago we first tasted Japanese wagyu meat at Huize M., a 'home restaurant' in Leiden of Klaus and Corine Martini. See their website for more info, maybe you are lucky and can join one of their dinners, as they are getting more and more popular.

The BBQ this evening existed of 2x5 pieces of different meat. It was yummie. The kind waitress helped us to prepare.

dessert (ice cream) is free :-)

At the hotel, we fetched our laundry, I started blogging after using the massage chair in the room (wow love it), and P. watched some colourful Japanese tv.

That's it for today.
